Which watch for which age

A 5-year-old and an 11-year-old need different things from a smartwatch. Here is a practical guide by age, based on what children of each age actually use, so you can choose with confidence.

What to look for

Ages 4–6: simple and safe

Few buttons, a short list of approved contacts and an SOS button the child can find without looking. A sturdy strap and a watch that survives the playground matter more than features.

Ages 7–9: school and first independence

Class mode for school hours, safe zones around home and school, and calls to the people they need. Video calls help them stay in touch with grandparents and parents at work.

Ages 10–12: more independence, same rules

A larger screen and video calls matter more at this age. Keep the contact list approved by you, and agree together on when you check the location.

At every age: battery and charging

Calls, video and frequent location updates use more battery. Choose a model that suits how your child will use it, and make charging a daily routine.

Setup tips

  1. Start from your child's daily routine: school, activities, who picks them up. Then pick the features that serve it.
  2. Check the product page for the features you need (video calls, screen size, water resistance) before you choose a model.
  3. Let older children help choose the colour and strap; a watch they like is a watch they wear.
  4. Review the settings as your child grows: contacts, safe zones and class mode times.
  5. Do an "SOS rehearsal" at home with your child, so they know when and how to press the button.

Good to know before you buy

  • Age bands are a general guide. Every child is different, and you know yours best.
  • Features differ between models. Check the product page of each watch, and ask us if anything is unclear.
  • No watch replaces supervision, road-safety lessons or talking with your child.
  • In Greece the age of digital consent is 15 (Law 4624/2019, art. 21). For younger children parents decide, but children should always know they wear a watch that shows their location.

Questions parents ask

What is the right age for a kids smartwatch?

There is no single answer. Many parents start when the child begins to spend time away from them, for example at school or activities. A watch can be an easier first step than a smartphone.

Is a smartwatch better than a phone for a young child?

For many families, yes. A kids watch is built around calls and location rather than apps and social media, and you approve the contacts. That covers what a young child needs most.

Do I need video calls?

Not for safety. Voice calls, location and SOS cover the essentials. Video calls are a nice extra, especially for keeping in touch with grandparents.

How do I talk to my child about the watch?

Simply and honestly: explain that it lets them call you and lets you see where they are, when you will look and why. Children who understand the watch are more likely to wear it and trust it.

Is it suitable for a kindergarten child?

It can be, if your child spends time away from you, for example with grandparents or at all-day kindergarten. At this age a strap that stays securely closed, a few contacts and practice with the SOS button matter most.

Can I manage two children's watches?

Each watch has its own SIM and is linked separately in the app. Ask us before you buy how two watches are organised under one parent account for the model you are considering.

Not sure which watch to pick?

Tell us who the watch is for and what matters to you. Our team in Thessaloniki, the official Wonlex dealer in Greece, will help you choose and set it up.
