Smartwatch or phone for a child aged 6–10?
At some point in primary school the question comes: "When can I have a phone?" Before you answer, it is worth looking at what a child this age really needs. For many families a watch is the step in between: staying in touch and staying safe, without everything else.

What to look for
What they actually need
To reach you when school ends or plans change, for you to reach them, and a way to ask for help. A 4G smartwatch with calls, location and an SOS button covers exactly that.
You set the contacts
On the watch, contacts are set from the parent app. On a phone, the same control takes parental-control apps and constant attention.
Less screen, fewer distractions
A kids watch is built around calls and location, not social media and videos. The small screen and class mode keep attention where it belongs.
A step before the phone
A watch is not a "no" to a phone forever. It is a way for your child to learn to look after a device, charge it and follow rules before moving to a smartphone.

Setup tips
- Write down the moments in the week when you need to reach your child. If the list reads "after school, practice, grandma's", a watch is probably enough.
- Talk to other parents in the class about what they are deciding. Shared rules help every child.
- Agree with your child up front when you will talk about a phone again, so it does not become a weekly argument.
- Let them pick the colour or strap so the watch feels like theirs.
Good to know before you buy
- A watch does not do what a smartphone does. It is not made for social media, videos or homework.
- It also needs a SIM with a mobile plan, so there is a monthly cost to your operator, as with a phone.
- There is no single "right" age for a phone. The ages here are a guide; you decide, based on your child.
- Every school has its own rules on electronic devices. Ask before your child wears the watch in class.
Questions parents ask
Will my child feel left out without a phone?
It depends on their friends and class. It helps to present the watch as something of their own, with calls and video calls, and as a sign that you trust them to do more on their own, not as a "baby phone".
Is a watch cheaper than a phone?
You can see each watch's price on its page. Both devices need a SIM with a plan, so the monthly cost depends on the operator, not the device. The big difference is less about money and more about what your child can do with it.
What happens when it is time for a phone?
The SIM can move to a phone if its plan allows, and the watch can go to a younger sibling. Before you hand it on, remove it from your app account.
From what age can a child wear a smartwatch?
There is no single answer. Many parents start when their child begins to spend time away from them. Our "Which watch for which age" guide explains what matters at each age.
